22nd April 2014 – Adult Braces

Well it’s been a full week after the “nightmare” Tooth extractions.

I think i’m holding up pretty well, the left extraction site looks pretty healthy now but the right still looks a bit sore. Still on a bit of a baby food diet lol Just been eating soft foods, however I did manage some chicken and pasta last night! RESULT!

Still feel like i’m talking funny and find my lips keep drying out quickly so I will need to stock up on lip care.

People keep telling me that the worst part is over, here’s hoping it actually is!

Weirdly enough I seem to have become obsessed with teeth and keep watching youtube videos and reading other peoples blogs. I seem to take a lot longer cleaning my teeth and still find it quite tricky around the extraction site as I don’t want to hurt it or ruin anything.

I think the whole eating thing after an extraction is a personal thing and you should only eat what you feel comfortable eating. A lot of people have told me they were eating a few hours after an extraction, others have said they stuck to soft food the first day or so but then just ate normally. I personally found that my mouth was too tender and decided to stick to the soft food. It’s also about confidence, I wasn’t very confident about eating solid foods so that’s why I stuck to the soft food, however now I can feel myself getting a bit more confident and feel I can maybe slowly start introducing “normal” food.

My tooth on the left side next to the extraction site still feels slightly wobbly but i’m guessing this is pretty normal.

I seem to keep having dreams or should I say nightmares that all my teeth have fallen out. After reading a lot about people getting braces and having tooth extractions I don’t seem to be alone in this.

I have my next appointment tomorrow which is for my fillings which hopefully won’t be as horrific as the last appointment.

Will keep you updated tomorrow when I should hopefully find out when I will get my braces on!

15th April 2014 – Adult Braces

Ok well today was the day I had my tooth extractions. Petrified doesn’t even cover it.

I felt sick all morning and all the way there. Still actually feel a bit sick now! Good news was that he didn’t think he needed to take any teeth from the bottom, so I have had 2 teeth from the top taken out and at the same time he inserted the anchor devices into my gums, which is good for me as I don’t need to go through 2 lots of pain!!

I’m not going to lie, it was HORRIBLE!! I hated every second of it. I even had to ask him to stop and I didn’t think I was going to be able to finish it! “slight pressure” they tell you, “ you won’t feel a thing”…….Aye right! It’s still a pair of pliers v my tooth at the end of the day and it still hurts and feels really odd and the noises are just horrific. Not only that but these anchor device things actually get screwed into your gum!!!! Yes I said that right SCREWED into your gum!

I drove home afterwards looking like the Godfather and just burst out into tears, my whole mouth was covered in blood all I can taste is blood and I can already feel the pain!! I eventually came back to work and still can’t talk properly so needless to say the phone has been put straight to voicemail.

The worst part is, all I can taste is blood and being a smoker, apparently I can’t smoke for at least the rest of the day!!! This is the time when you want a cigarette more than anything.

Having said that, I am really proud of myself for going through with it and actually getting this part done, this was the part i was dreading.

Looks like it will be soup and mashed potatoes for me for the next few nights but hopefully by then I will be ready to go back, get a filling and then make the appointment to get the braces put on.

People tend not to tell you the bad parts, I have this horrible sinking feeling thinking “Why have I done this to myself” and regretting it already, I’m sure the end result will make it all worthwhile.

Still not really sure if I can drink water as it says not to rinse your mouth for 24hours, which would be fine but does that mean I can’t drink water? Surely that would rinse it slightly? Also how long do I leave it before I can eat!? I’ve not had anything all day for worrying about getting it done and now it’s done I can’t have anything anyways!! Lol Ah well maybe all this will help with weightloss as well 😉 I’ll try not to cry too much tonight and update you tomorrow.

9th April 2014 – Adult Braces

Ok so at the age of 30 (nearly 31) I have decided to get Braces. Eek!

I have always had issues with my teeth, but couple that with a fear of the Dentist and you gets years of me not doing anything about it. I used to get bullied because of it and through out my 20’s there are always comments etc. People just don’t realise that even the mention of my teeth send me into a mental turmoil.

As I have got older, I have been a bit more willing to go to the dentist, although in doing that I ended up getting all 4 wisdom teeth taken out a few fillings and root treatment, which you can imagine didn’t help me overcome my fear!

I have considered braces for a long time now and have looked into various options, mainly down to cost I was a bit nervous I wouldn’t be able to pay for them. It’s a big decision to take at this stage in my life and after plucking up the courage, (with a little help from my friends) I finally made an appointment for a consultation. I looked at many dentists within Glasgow and finally made a decision to go with Complete Dental Care. Hassan talked me through everything and I decided to go ahead with the ceramic braces (as I’m self conscious enough without adding to that with a mouth full of metal) for me the less obvious the better.

Hassan explained I would need some teeth taken out to make room for my teeth to straighten out and I have my first appointment for that next week (15th). Even thinking about this, my stomach is in knots and I genuinely have THE FEAR!

I will keep you updated on my progress and hope this helps other people who have been going through the same turmoil as me.

I just need to keep thinking of the end result!!!

Below is a photo of the braces I will be getting and a photo of me “before” any work being done to my teeth.
